The film opens with Croft in an Egyptian tomb, seeking a diamond at one end of a chamber. As she approaches she is attacked by a large robot. After an intense chase and battle, she disables it by ripping out its motivational circuits. She takes the diamond, which is revealed to be a memory card labeled ‘Lara’s Party Mix,’ and inserts it into a laptop computer inside the robot, whereupon it plays music. Now it is revealed that the scene took place in a practice arena in Croft’s home, and that her assistant, Bryce, programmed the robot, to challenge her in combat.

It is the day of the first phase of a planetary alignment, culminating in a solar eclipse on the Earth, which happens once every 5,000 years. In Venice, the Illuminati search for a key to rejoin halves of “the triangle,” which must be done by the final phase of the alignment. Mr. Powell, an Illuminati member, assures that they are almost ready, but in reality he has no idea where to find the key.

Croft’s butler, Hillary, tries to interest her in several projects, but she ignores them. 15 May, as Hillary is aware, is the day that Croft’s father disappeared many years earlier. She has not recovered from his loss.

At the mansion, Hillary and Bryce are shocked to see Croft wearing a dress. She goes into the garden to her father’s memorial, then returns inside, where Bryce has a reprogrammed SIMON, ready to challenge Croft once again. Hillary reveals a silver tray holding Croft’s pistols, which she takes with a smile.

Cameron Poe (Nicholas Cage), an honorably discharged United States Army Ranger, is found guilty of manslaughter for killing a drunken man in a bar brawl while trying to defend his pregnant wife Tricia (Monica Potter) and sentenced to seven to ten years. During his time in prison, he communicates with his daughter while taking time to better himself.

He is released on parole eight years later and is scheduled to be flown back to Alabama on the same day as his daughter Casey’s (Landry Allbright) seventh birthday. Poe is arranged transport on the “Jailbird”, a C-123 airplane, along with a fellow prisoner Mike “Baby-O” O’Dell (Mykelti Williamson) and several other prisoners destined for a new Supermax prison, including William “Billy Bedlam” Bedford (Nick Chinlund), Nathan “Diamond Dog” Jones (Ving Rhames), and Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom (John Malkovich).

The transfer is overseen by U.S. Marshal Vince Larkin (John Cusack); however, he is approached by Drug Enforcement Administration agent Duncan Malloy (Colm Meaney), who asks to put undercover agent Willie Sims (Jose Zuniga) on board the plane in order to gain intelligence from one of the prisoners during flight. Larkin acquiesces on the condition the agent go aboard unarmed, but Malloy is able to sneak Sims a gun during the boarding pat-down.

At the end, Garland Greene, the only fugitive still at large, is seen at a Vegas table playing Craps and sipping margaritas.

The General s Daughter

by admin on Apr.15, 2009, under Crime, Drama, Mystery, Thriller

  • Directors: Simon West
  • Producers: Mace Neufeld
  • Writers: Christopher Bertolini, William Goldman, Nelson DeMille
  • Genres: Crime, Drama, Mystery, Thriller
  • Actors: John Travolta, Madeleine Stowe, James Cromwell, Timothy Hutton, James Woods, Leslie Stefanson

Chief Warrant Officer Four Paul Brenner (John Travolta) is in Georgia masquerading as First Sergeant Frank White at a local army base, to broker an illegal arms trade with a self-proclaimed freedom fighter. While on the base, his car gets a flat tire. Without a lug wrench, a pretty young officer arrives and helps him change the spare. The officer is Captain Elisabeth Campbell (Leslie Stefanson), the base commanding general’s daughter and army captain in psychological operations. The next evening, she is found murdered. Brenner and another warrant officer, Sara Sunhill (Madeleine Stowe) are brought in to investigate, as both are part of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command. They find Captain Campbell’s body staked down with tent poles, strangled, and presumably raped.

They search Elisabeth’s home off base and find it typical of a career Army officer, with one exception: through a false door in the basement, they find what appears to be a sexual dungeon of sorts, with handcuffs, harnesses, and a camera connected to a VCR. Sunhill goes to their car to make a call from her cell phone, and while Brenner gathers the tapes, he is attacked by a masked figure armed with a steel snow shovel. The culprit manages to disorient Brenner long enough to steal the videotapes. Brenner questions Elisabeth’s close confidante, Colonel Robert Moore (James Woods), who also works in psy ops. Though cordial and somewhat cooperative, Moore is evasive when questioned, and gives an alibi of being in bed asleep at the time of the murder. However, this proves false when Moore’s fingerprints are found on Elisabeth’s dog tags that were found in a plastic trash bag several yards from her body, along with her clothing. Brenner arrests Moore on charges of conduct unbecoming an officer and takes him to jail.

As the general steps toward the plane, one is given to see that it is his end, as well as his daughter’s, that he is approaching. The film ends with a montage of Elizabeth’s happy childhood and Brenner and Sunhill departing in opposite directions and an admiring glance by Sunhill at the departing Brenner.
