The film begins at the table tennis finals of the 1988 Olympics. Twelve-year old Randy Daytona (Brett DelBuono) is the American contender. He is anxious, and his anxiety increases when his father (Robert Patrick) says that he bet on him despite his original promise not to. His opponent is Karl Wolfschtagg (Thomas Lennon) from the German Democratic Republic. During the intense first point, Daytona runs back too far and hits his head on the table. This loss, combined with the fact his father, who bet on his son to win, got killed by Triad agents of the criminal Feng (Christopher Walken), Daytona left competitive ping pong a disgrace.

Nineteen years later, Daytona (Dan Fogler) is working at the Peppermill Casino in Reno, Nevada, doing table tennis routines. After getting kicked out (for scaring someone that unexpectedly caused a heart attack), Daytona meets FBI agent Ernie Rodriguez (George Lopez) who requests his assistance in taking down Feng. Daytona eventually agrees as Rodriguez informs Daytona that he needs to win some championships in order to be noticed by Feng’s scouts. After losing as a local tournament to get to state, Daytona is brought to a China Town noodle shop to be apprenticed under a blind man named Wong (James Hong), who was Feng’s former mentor. With his niece Maggie (Maggie Q) aiding Daytona, Wong chides him in his training until China Town locals vandalize Master Wong’s house for him going against their edict of teaching white people ping pong. They say that the only way to solve this is to defeat “The Dragon” (which is actually a small girl) in a ping pong match with Wong exiled from China Town if Daytona loses. After a short match, Daytona defeats The Dragon, who kicks him in the groin before running off in defeat. Feng’s men take note of Daytona’s victory and invite him to participate, with he, Rodriguez, and Wong leave for the tournament soon afterwards.

The credits then roll as the entire cast performs a rendition of Def Leppard’s, “Pour Some Sugar On Me”.

Will Burton (Gaelan Connell) is used to being bullied or completely ignored by his schoolmates, so when cool and popular former cheerleader Charlotte Barnes (Alyson Michalka) starts inviting him to spend time with her, the teenager is stunned — as is his single mom Karen (Lisa Kudrow). Impressed by his eclectic knowledge of music, Charlotte, a gifted singer-songwriter, asks Will to manage her rock/ska band. Her goal is to take revenge on her egocentric musician ex-boyfriend Ben Wheatley (Scott Porter) at a regional battle of the bands.

Unsure of what he’s getting himself into, Will agrees to help Charlotte’s band, including Bug (Charlie Saxton) and Omar (Tim Jo), eventually expanding it with a crew of like-minded outcasts. Against all odds, the group’s sound starts to come together and their prospects for success look bright. Even more surprising, Will starts losing his “loser-status”, up to the point there is a potential romance brewing with Sa5m (Vanessa Hudgens), a classmate with untapped musical talents.

Perpetually a misfit, Will strikes up a friendship with like-minded outsider Sam. They are both surprised when the school’s “it” girl, Charlotte recruits Will to help assemble a band to compete in “Bandslam,” a battle of the bands that is “Texas High School Football BIG.” Charlotte’s ex-boyfriend Ben Wheatly is poised to win with his band Glory Dogs – Springsteen wannabes down to their hats. For the first time in his life, Will finds he is uniquely suited to not only participate in something, but to truly make a difference
