Las Vegas magician and wannabe gangster Buddy “Aces” Israel is hiding out in a Lake Tahoe hotel penthouse with his entourage, while his agent Morris Mecklen discusses a potential immunity deal with Deputy Director Locke of the FBI. Agents Messner and Carruthers learn that mob boss Primo Sparrazza has put a hit out on Israel worth one million dollars involving a mysterious assassin known as the Swede, with the added stipulation that he bring him Israel’s heart as well. A number of assassins are also after the reward, including Lazlo Soot, a Hungarian who specializes in disguises and impersonations; Sharice Watters and Georgia Sykes, a duo of hitwomen hired by Sparazza’s underboss; Pasquale Acosta, torture expert and mercenary; and the psychotic Neo-Nazi Tremor Brothers.

Locke dispatches Messner and Carruthers to be ready to take Israel into custody when the deal is struck. A team of bail bondsmen, Jack Dupree and his partners, “Pistol” Pete Deeks and Hollis Elmore, have been hired by the firm that posted Israel’s bail. The bondsmen are attacked by the Tremors and only Elmore escapes alive. Messner is dispatched to the murder scene while Caruthers proceeds to Israel. Meanwhile, each of the assassins gain access to the hotel in their own various ways.

Messner, furious over the unnecessary deaths, especially Carruthers’, protests and is ordered to leave the hospital. Instead, he walks into the emergency room, locks the doors, and pulls the plug on both men. He then lays his gun and badge on the floor and sits in disbelief as Locke and the doctors desperately try to break in.

  • Writers: Nick Cassavetes, David McKenna
  • Genres: Biography, Crime, Drama
  • Actors: Johnny Depp, Ray Liotta, Paul Reubens, Franka Potente, Rachel Griffiths, Ethan Suplee, Cliff Curtis

The film opens to a young George and his parents Fred (Ray Liotta) and Ermine (Rachel Griffiths). George’s father never wanted to argue in front of the boy. The boy’s father supports his family in Weymouth, Massachusetts by running a small plumbing company. His mother is constantly complaining that the family has no money and badgers her husband, asking him what they are going to do. Finally, despite Fred’s relentless efforts to keep the family afloat, they eventually have to file for bankruptcy and lose everything. The boy decides then that he will not let the same fate befall him.

A grown-up George (Johnny Depp) moves to Southern California with his friend “Tuna” (Ethan Suplee) and they get a beachside apartment and make friends with all the locals. They don’t want to get real jobs so Tuna comes up with the idea of selling marijuana. George’s new girlfriend, Barbara Buckley (Franka Potente) sets them on the path to do just that by introducing them to her friend/entrepreneur Derek Foreal (Paul Reubens), who is the main dealer in the area. With Derek’s help, George and Tuna make a lot of money selling to all the people in the area. Their other friend, Kevin Dulli (Max Perlich) who is a college student back in Boston visits them while on vacation. He begins to tell George and Tuna about the shortage of quality pot and the enormous demand given all the colleges in that area. With the help of Barbara, an airline stewardess, they start bringing the drugs to Boston.

George promises his daughter Kristina that he will take her to California, as that is her dream vacation, and goes into one last deal to garner enough money for the trip. On the deal, he is set up by the FBI and DEA along with old accomplices, and sentenced to 60 years at Otisville State Prison in upstate New York. He explains in the end that the sentence did not bother him so much as the emotional damage he caused on those he loved and how his ambition exceeded his talent.

Hannibal

by admin on Apr.14, 2009, under Crime, Thriller

  • Directors: Ridley Scott
  • Producers: Ridley Scott, Dino De Laurentiis
  • Writers: Screenplay, David Mamet, Steven Zaillian, Novel, Thomas Harris
  • Genres: Crime, Thriller
  • Actors: Anthony Hopkins, Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman, Ray Liotta, Giancarlo Giannini, Zeljko Ivanek, Frankie Faison, Francesca Neri

The film takes place 10 years after the events depicted in The Silence of the Lambs. FBI Agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore) is disgraced after a botched drug raid resulting in the deaths of five people, including HIV-positive drug dealer Evelda Drumgo (Hazelle Goodman), who was shot by Starling while holding a baby — and threatening Starling with a “whispering death” (MAC-10). Though Starling had tried to abort the raid before a violent situation developed, another officer charged ahead and precipitated the gun battle with Drumgo and her bodyguards, and Starling is unjustly blamed for the mess by Justice Department official Paul Krendler (Ray Liotta), whose romantic advances Starling had rejected years earlier.

As a result of the publicity surrounding the drug raid, Starling and her past connection to escaped serial killer Hannibal Lecter come to the attention of one of Lecter’s victims, Mason Verger (Gary Oldman), a wealthy, sadistic pedophile. Verger, who was left horrifically disfigured and paralyzed by his encounter with Lecter, still seeks revenge for what occurred. He uses his political influence to have Starling assigned to the Lecter case once again in the hope that this will draw Lecter out of hiding.

Verger claims to have new information about Lecter (an X-ray) which he is willing to disclose only to Starling, and she is sent to his estate to collect it and interview him. Upon her arrival, Verger tells Starling about his history with Lecter. They met when Lecter was assigned by a court as Verger’s therapist after Verger’s conviction on multiple counts of child molestation. Verger, the only one of Lecter’s victims to survive, is now bedridden and confined to his secluded mansion, but with the assistance of his personal physician Cordell (Zeljko Ivanek) and other minions he is pursuing an elaborate scheme to capture, torture and kill Lecter.

Next we see Starling outside the house, looking for Lecter, who escaped just before the police cars arrived. Both her hands are intact.

Wild Hogs

by admin on Apr.14, 2009, under Action, Adventure, Comedy

  • Directors: Walt Becker
  • Producers: Kristin Burr, Todd Lieberman, Brian Robbins, Amy Sayres, Sharla Sumpter, Michael Tollin
  • Writers: Brad Copeland, Robert Popper
  • Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy
  • Actors: Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, William H Macy, Ray Liotta, Marisa Tomei

Doug Madsen (Tim Allen), Woody Stevens (John Travolta), Bobby Davis (Martin Lawrence) and Dudley Frank (William H. Macy) are four middle-aged suburban men in Cincinnati who find themselves frustrated with the pace of daily life. Woody is a formerly rich businessman who suddenly finds himself alone and broke. Doug is a dentist who can’t connect with his son, and he misses his college glory days when he was called “The Golden Knight.” Bobby is a plumber who is henpecked by his wife and daughters while trying to follow his dream of writing a plumbing how-to book. Dudley is a computer geek who seeks to find a woman in his life. Their one collective hobby had always been to ride together on motorcycles around the city, though after college that happened less and less often.

When Woody finds out that his marriage is ending in divorce and that he’s bankrupt, he suggests they embark on a cross-country road trip west on their bikes to seek adventure. After some hesitation from the other three, the four agree to the trip and set off on their Harley-Davidsons.

The road trip is filled with humorous moments, such as sleeping close together scantily dressed and being found by an obviously gay policeman (John C. McGinley) who tells them they can be charged with lewd and lascivious behavior, but it turns out that he is only teasing: he is actually jealous. Later, when the four go to a small lake, a family on a picnic joins them in the water only to realize the four men are naked. The policeman appears again; he also undresses and joins the four men, who quickly leave.

The closing credits include excerpts from a faux episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition where the Del Fuegos are given a brand new bar. Jack can barely restrain his emotions as he views it.

An anonymous flasher (Randy Gambill) exposes himself to shoppers in the Forest Ridge Mall parking lot. The head of mall security, Ronald “Ronnie” Barnhardt (Seth Rogen), makes it his mission to apprehend the offender. He is assisted by the Yuen twins (Matt and John Yuan), Charles (Jesse Plemons) and Dennis (Michael Peña) in his efforts. At home, Ronnie has a loving but dysfunctional relationship with his alcoholic mother (Celia Weston).

Ronnie’s dream girl, Brandi (Anna Faris) who works a mall make-up counter, is flashed the next day, becoming distraught over the situation. Ronnie tries to comfort her until a police officer, Detective Harrison (Ray Liotta), arrives and takes over Ronnie’s palliative role. Ronnie feels threatened by this and is upset that his boss allowed an outside person to infringe on his search for the offender.

The criminal activity at the mall continues, as a masked person is seen robbing a shoe store, causing property damage. Detective Harrison is once again called in to investigate, his efforts hindered by Ronnie’s unusual attempts to resolve the matter. In response, Harrison curses out Ronnie during a meeting with Ronnie’s superior. In defiance of the detective’s angry rant, Ronnie decides to take the steps necessary to become a real police officer.

Refusing the flasher an ambulance, Ronnie takes him to the police station, impressing and insulting the officers who had previously ridiculed him. Goodfellas

by admin on Apr.14, 2009, under Biography, Crime, Drama

  • Directors: Martin Scorsese
  • Producers: Irwin Winkler
  • Writers: Book, Nicholas Pileggi, Screenplay, Nicholas Pileggi, Martin Scorsese
  • Genres: Biography, Crime, Drama
  • Actors: Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco, Paul Sorvino

In the opening scene, main character Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) admits, “As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster,” referring to his idolizing the Lucchese crime family gangsters in his blue-collar, predominantly Italian neighborhood in East New York, Brooklyn in 1955. Feeling the connection of being a part of something, Henry quits school and goes to work for them. His father, knowing the true nature of the Mafia, tries to stop Henry after learning of his truancy, but the gangsters ensure that his parents no longer hear from the school by threatening the local postal carrier with dire consequences should he deliver any more letters from the school to Henry’s house.

Henry is soon taken under the wing of the local mob captain, Paul “Paulie” Cicero (Paul Sorvino, based on the actual Lucchese mobster Paul Vario) and Cicero’s close Irish associate Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro, based on Jimmy Burke). They help to cultivate Henry’s criminal career, and introduce Henry to the entire network of Paulie’s crime syndicate. Henry and his friends soon become successful, daring, and dangerous. Jimmy loves hijacking trucks, and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci, based on Tommy DeSimone) is an aggressive psychopath with a hair-trigger temper. Henry commits the Air France Robbery and it marks his debut into the big time of organized crime. Enjoying the perks of their criminal activities, the friends spend most of their nights at the Copacabana night club with countless women. Around this time, Henry meets and later marries a no-nonsense Jewish girl from the Five Towns named Karen (Lorraine Bracco). Karen at first is troubled by Henry’s criminal activities, but when a neighbor assaults her for refusing his advances, Henry pistol-whips him in front of her, displaying all of the viciousness and confidence of proven gangsters. She feels vindicated, intrigued, and aroused by the fact, especially when Henry leaves her the gun he used on the culprit.

The film ends with title cards that tell us that Henry has been clean since 1987; Paul Cicero died in Fort Worth Prison of respiratory illness in 1988 at 73 and Jimmy is serving a 20-year-to-life sentence in a New York State prison, not being eligible for parole until 2004. (Jimmy died of lung cancer in 1996, but this was six years after the film was released and thus not listed.)
