The film begins with a cold open. In 1958, during their summer vacation, Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and Sandy Olsen (Olivia Newton-John) meet at a beach but before long, Sandy and Danny say their last good-byes as Sandy is due to return to Australia. She is upset, thinking that this is the end of their romance and that they will never see each other again. Danny tries to comfort her by telling her “it’s only the beginning”.

However, Sandy’s family has a change of plans and does not return to Australia, but Danny is unaware of this. Sandy enrolls at Rydell High School as a foreign-exchange student, where Danny is a student, and is taken under the wing of Frenchy (Didi Conn), her cousin and a member of the schoolgirl clique “The Pink Ladies,” whose leader is Betty Rizzo (Stockard Channing), a former girlfriend of Danny.

Danny is the leader of the boys’ gang, “The T-Birds.” Kenickie, second in command of the T-Birds, encourages Danny to tell them what he did over the summer, while the Pink Ladies likewise persuade Sandy. Through “Summer Nights” Sandy and Danny describe their vacation with the other. Sandy focuses on the emotional aspects of their relationship while Danny brags about the physical to the T-Birds.

On the last day of school, the Seniors have a graduation carnival where Danny arrives wearing a letterman’s sweater (earned through track) over his usual black attire in an effort to prove to Sandy he is willing to change for her. Sandy arrives wearing a sexy “greaser” girl outfit. She and Danny reconcile and sing “You’re the One That I Want” (another song added for the movie, and a hit single before the movie even came out). Kenickie and Rizzo get back together after Rizzo tells him she is not pregnant. They gang wonder if they will remain in contact after high school but Danny assures them that they will and then everyone sings the big finale, “We Go Together”. Danny and Sandy fly off in Danny’s car and disappear into the horizon.
