The Motaba virus is discovered in a mercenary camp in Africa in 1967 and kept top secret. Two soldiers order the camp bombed to cover up the discovery of the virus.
Thirty years later, the virus resurfaces in Africa. Col. Sam Daniels (Dustin Hoffman), a USAMRIID virologist is sent to investigate the Motaba case. He and his crew gain information about the virus and return to the United States where he asks his superior, General Ford (Morgan Freeman), to put out an alert for the virus. Ford, who knows the virus is not new, tells Daniels that it is unlikely to show up. Neither of them know that one of the host animals, a White-fronted Capuchin Monkey, has been illegally brought to the U.S. to be sold as a pet. Jimbo Scott (Patrick Dempsey) takes the monkey to Cedar Creek, California. On the trip, the monkey infects Jimbo with the virus.
Once Jimbo arrives at the pet store the owner tells him he got the wrong gender, but only after the monkey has infected him. Jimbo releases the monkey into the woods. Jimbo starts to show signs of infection on his plane trip to Boston, where he gets off the plane and kisses his girlfriend, infecting her. They are both hospitalized and Daniels’ ex-wife, Robby (Rene Russo), investigates the infection. Jimbo, his girlfriend and the pet store owner die from the virus. Robby investigates and concludes that everybody in Boston checked out all right.
On the way back they are confronted by McClintock (who also came by helicopter to prevent them from returning to Cedar Creek). Daniels has Salt fire a missile into the trees to trick McClintock with a decoy helicopter crash. Returning to Cedar Creek, Salt mixes the monkey’s antibodies with the E-1101 to create an anti-serum, in time to save Robby but not Casey. Daniels discovers Operation Clean Sweep is in progress; he and Salt take it upon themselves to fly in the way of the bomber to stop it. With support from Ford, Daniels is able stay in the way of the plane long enough to convince the pilot and his bombardier that information was withheld from them. The bombardier detonates the bomb over water instead of the town. Ford, having had enough of McClintock’s agenda, relieves him of command and places him under arrest for withholding information from the President. McClintock promises to take Ford down with him. Daniels makes up with his wife, and the remaining residents of the town are successfully cured.

Three weeks after an operation in which United States and Russian special forces captured the tyrannical leader of Kazakhstan, General Ivan Radek, U.S. President James Marshall announces in a speech in Moscow that America will undertake a new offensive against terrorism. His visit complete, the President heads home to Washington, D.C. aboard Air Force One.
Secret Service agent Gibbs kills three fellow agents once the plane is airborne and opens the on-board weapons locker. Soviet neo-nationalists, led by Ivan Korshunov, had boarded the plane posing as a news crew who had been cleared to fly on Air Force One, the same news crew that was later found dead. They seize the weapons and search the plane for Marshall, killing many passengers. The President is evacuated to an escape pod by numerous Secret Service agents, all of whom are gunned down. The terrorists assume he had escaped in the deployed capsule, but Marshall actually remained onboard in hiding. The remaining passengers (White House Chief of Staff Lloyd Shepherd, military advisor Major Caldwell, National Security Advisor Jack Doherty, Marshall’s wife and daughter, and others) are held hostage in the conference room while the cockpit crew locks the door and prepares to land at Ramstein Air Base. The terrorists break in and kill the non-compliant pilots, taking control of the plane and aborting the landing at Ramstein.
Kazakh MiG-29 fighter jets loyal to Radek soon reach Air Force One and inflict serious damage to its engines. US F-15 fighters intercept and fend off the hostile aircraft, shooting down several. Although one of the US fighter pilots flies into the path of a missile to save Air Force One, the plane is too heavily damaged to land. Air Force Pararescue hastily arranges an air-to-air zip-line rescue from a C-130 Hercules, but before the evacuation can be completed the damaged plane begins a rapid descent with Marshall, his family, Caldwell, Shepherd, and Gibbs still aboard. Marshall insists on evacuating his family and the wounded Shepherd before himself. Once it is Marshall’s turn to leave, though, Gibbs, actually a mole by the neo-nationalists, drops all pretense and kills Caldwell and the parajumper, attempting to be the last one off and leave the president to die. Marshall fights with Gibbs and escapes on the zip-line, leaving Gibbs aboard the doomed plane as it crashes into the Caspian Sea. The C-130 announces, “Liberty 2-4 is changing call-signs… Liberty 2-4 is now Air Force One!”, indicating the president is aboard, and the film ends with it flying safely away with the First Family aboard and a fighter jet escort.

In September 1991, the swordfishing boat Andrea Gail returns to home port in Gloucester, Massachusetts with a poor catch. The owner of the Andrea Gail starts to get mad upon the distribution of salary to the crew, and insults the captain for his streak of poor catches. Desperate for money, the captain convinces his reluctant crew to join him for one more late season fishing expedition. They head out past their usual fishing grounds, leaving a developing thunderstorm behind them. After little success, they head to the Flemish Cap, where they find great success. At their height of fishing, the engineer is unable to fix their aging and battered ice machine, so the only way to preserve their catch is to hurry back home. After a debate as to sailing straight through the building storm or to wait it out, the crew decides to head home quickly with their 60,000 pounds of fish. However, between the Andrea Gail and Gloucester is a confluence of two powerful weather fronts and a hurricane, which the crew of Andrea Gail underestimates. After repeated warnings from other ships, the Andrea Gail loses her antenna, forcing a fellow ship to call “Mayday” for the Andrea Gail. A US Coast Guard rescue helicopter responds, but after failing to perform a midair refuel, the helicopter crew ditches the aircraft, and is luckily rescued by a Coast Guard vessel, the Tamaroa. The Andrea Gail endures various problems, with 40 feet waves crashing on to the deck, a broken anchor ramming the side of the ship, and two men thrown overboard, the crew decides to turn around. They head into the eye of the hurricane, as they see the sun for the last time before an overhelming wave (possibly 70 – 100 feet high) sinks the fishing vessel. Friends and family worry and wait for a ship that never comes home.
