The Dursleys are preparing for a visit from Uncle Vernon Dursley’s boss. When Harry is locked in his room during the visit, he first encounters Dobby the house elf. Dobby warns him not to go back to Hogwarts because there are rumors of dangerous things being plotted. When Harry refuses to not return to Hogwarts, the house elf, in a blackmail attempt, hovers a cake over the head of Uncle Vernon’s boss and drops it. Thinking that Harry did it, Vernon puts bars on Harry’s windows so he cannot make an escape to Hogwarts. All of Uncle Vernon’s efforts fail however, when Ron, Fred, and George Weasley arrive in their flying car to rescue Harry and flee the Dursley home.
The four arrive at The Burrow, the family home of the Weasleys. Mrs Weasley catches the four coming in, and while ensuring Harry that she is not blaming him, yells at her three sons for their carelessness. She tells the boys that they could have been seen by “Muggles” (non-magical people) as they flew through the air. As underage wizards are strictly forbidden to perform magic in the presence of unknowing Muggles, their stunt could have easily resulted in their expulsion from Hogwarts. Harry then meets Ginny, the youngest Weasley child and the only girl, and Ron’s father, Arthur Weasley, during a typical Weasley family breakfast. The five student-aged Weasleys — including Percy Weasley — receive letters from Hogwarts from their owls. Booklists in hand, the Weasleys soon leave for Diagon Alley. Harry has never used Floo Powder — the Weasleys’ chosen method of transportation — and is unsure of himself. In his nervousness, he accidentally pronounces “Diagon Alley” as “diagonally”, landing himself in Knockturn Alley. Fortunately, Hagrid happens upon him, leading him to Diagon Alley and reuniting him with the Weasleys and Hermione Granger.
…
Harry, who is dying from the fang’s poison, defeats Tom Riddle, by piercing the diary with the fang retrieved from his own arm. Ginny comes round and finds Harry hurt but Fawkes answers Harry’s loyalty to Dumbledore and heals Harry’s wound with his tears. Then Harry, Ron, Ginny and Lockhart leave the chamber pulled by Fawkes. Dumbledore gives Ron the task to send a letter to Azkaban to release Hagrid, and Harry discovers that Voldemort has transferred his parseltongue (snake language) powers by accident into his scar. In addition, the fact that Harry had used Godric Gryffindor’s sword means he must belong in Gryffindor House. Harry soon finds out that Dobby serves the Malfoys and tricks Lucius Malfoy into giving the house elf a sock, thereby freeing him from servitude. Everyone who is petrified is re-animated and before starting the end-of-year feast, Hagrid returns (late as is usual, due to some ‘ruddy owl called Errol’ getting lost while delivering his release papers), and everyone cheers his arrival. After school ends, Diagon Alley is shown. In the window of the bookshop is Lockhart’s new book, “Who Am I?”, with the cover image being Lockhart in a straitjacket.

The Goonies, a group of young teenaged friends living in Astoria, Oregon, face foreclosure on their families’ homes from the expanding Astoria Country Club. On one of their last days their morale sinks particularly low due to the cancellation of their programmed farewell road trip due to Mikey’s older brother having flunked his driver’s license exam.
While rummaging through the bric-a-brac accumulated in the Walshes’ attic by their father (a local museum curator), they find an old newspaper clipping, a Spanish map, and an artifact relating to a rumor of a forgotten pirate treasure somewhere in the area. Hearing the call of adventure, Mikey tries to persuade his friends to join him in search for the treasure hoarded by a pirate named One Eyed Willie. Initially reluctant, the group eventually decides to usurp the authority of Mikey’s older brother Brandon and escape for one last “Goonie adventure.”
They head to the coast and stumble upon an abandoned seaside restaurant that seems to match coordinates set by the map and an old doubloon. With the help of Mouth, a cocky but loyal friend of the group, they are able to translate the map and confirm they are headed in the right direction. Unbeknownst to the Goonies, the restaurant is actually a secret hideout of a family of Italian criminals known as the Fratellis. While the kids believe the Fratellis are restaurant owners and workers, they are inevitably shooed away by Mama Fratelli, but they evacuate the premises only to come back later when the coast is clear. Once Brandon finally tracks the boys down and insists they return home immediately, they are met with Steph and Andy, two female peers Brandon knows from school. Undeterred with his agenda, and with Brandon being distracted by the company of the girls, Mikey continues to search for clues, feeling that he is closer than ever in finding the treasure. Data, the group’s tech whiz, discovers a counterfeit money-making machine and soon the group realizes who the Fratellis really are. To make matters worse, they find the dead body of an F.B.I. agent stored away in a freezer, and the Fratellis have returned to the hideout, though they remain unaware of the Goonies’ presence in the basement.
…
The Goonies barely escape and make their way out to the beach outside the cave, where they are met by the early morning and spotted by a couple of police scouts on ATVs. The group is reunited with their families, Sloth and Chunk proclaim their love for one another, and the rest of the Fratellis are arrested. Even though everyone is happy that the young adventurers were unharmed, the kids themselves are devastated at their inability to hold onto any of the treasure lost in the cave’s collapse. All hope is restored when Rosalita, the Walshes’ housekeeper, discovers a handful of precious jewels left in Mikey’s marble bag. With this new fortune, the Goonies are able to save everyone’s homes from foreclosure. The Inferno, One-Eyed Willie, and its cargo of “rich stuff” gracefully sail out of the collapsed cave and into the sun.

The character Randall “Rand” Peltzer is an inventor of modest abilities and questionable success. From the fictional community of Kingston Falls, he travels to Chinatown in New York City to sell his inventions and pick up a present for his son Billy. A young Chinese boy there takes Rand to his grandfather’s small shop, where Rand takes interest in a small cute furry creature called a mogwai (which in Cantonese & Mandarin translates as “ghost”, “devil”, or “demon”). Mr. Wing, the Chinese boy’s grandfather and owner of the shop, refuses to sell the mogwai even when Rand offers US $200 for it. This is money that the Wing family desperately needs, however; therefore Wing’s grandson secretly sells the mogwai to Rand. Though the creature seems innocent enough, the grandson warns Rand that he must not let the mogwai near bright light, especially sunlight, which can kill the mogwai; must not allow water to touch the mogwai; and, most importantly, must never, ever feed it after midnight.
Rand names the creature “Gizmo” and brings him home to his son Billy, a young man who has taken up a job at the bank to provide money for his parents, with whom he lives. He has a dog called Barney whose mischief makes him and Billy the targets of harassment by Ruby Deagle, an elderly woman wielding much financial influence. Billy’s coworker and love interest Kate Beringer, a local bartender, sees directly the misery in the town caused by Mrs. Deagle’s business practices.
…
At the end of the film, Mr. Wing returns to collect Gizmo to prevent any recurrence of trouble. After giving back the $200 that Rand paid, Mr. Wing observes that while Western society is not ready to properly care for a mogwai, Billy may one day be so. The narrator (Rand) then ends the story warning the audience that there might be a gremlin in their house.

Macaulay Culkin stars as Kevin McCallister, who is once again separated from his family during one of their Christmas travels (following the first film). This time, his family plans a trip to Miami, Florida. At O’Hare International Airport, Kevin loses sight of his family while replacing the batteries in his Talkboy (taking his father’s bag in the process). He then boards a flight to LaGuardia Airport in New York City, after accidentally following a man who is wearing the same coat as his father. While in New York, he decides to make the most of, as he puts it, “the greatest excitement of my life”.
While Kevin did not make it to Miami, his luggage did. Kevin’s bag is pulled off the carousel and passed down the line to his cousin, Fuller, who realizes that Kevin did not embark on the flight to Miami. Kevin’s bag is returned to the front of the line to his mother and father (Kate and Peter McCallister), causing Kate to faint. The Miami Airport security staff decides to call O’Hare International Airport, in hopes that Kevin is still in the airport.
The McCallisters are then trying to figure out where Kevin could be since he is not at O’Hare Airport. After being asked to see a photo of their son, Peter realizes that Kevin has his wallet and therefore can be tracked if he uses Peter’s credit card (which he has, to no one’s knowledge).
…
The next morning, Christmas Day, Mr. Duncan (the owner of Duncan’s Toy Chest) sends a whole truckload of presents to Kevin and his family at the Plaza Hotel as a reward for Kevin getting the thieves arrested. Kevin sees the two turtledoves. He goes to see the “pigeon lady” in Central Park, gives her one of the turtledoves, and reaffirms his promise to be her friend. Then they hug. At the same time, the bellboy (Rob Schneider) comes to the McCallisters’ hotel room with Kevin’s room service bill. Buzz looks at the bill and says, “Merry Christmas, indeed.” Then he sees that they charged a rather high total of $967.43 on the food Kevin had purchased before, causing Kevin’s father to get mad and scream loud enough that Kevin hears this from the park: “Kevin! You spent $967 on room service?!” This causes Kevin to run back to the hotel.

Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams) is an out-of-work . Miranda (Sally Field) has reached the end of her patience with their marriage due to his irresponsibility. Since Daniel has no steady source of income (as Miranda was the main breadwinner of the family), Miranda gets primary custody of their three children (fourteen-year-old Lydia, twelve-year-old Chris and five-year-old Natalie) and Daniel has visitation rights limited to Saturday evenings. The news is crushing to Daniel, who adores his children.
When Daniel learns Miranda intends to place an advertisement for a housekeeper, he requests to pick them up from school and spend time with them. The children are receptive, but Miranda nixes the idea. Daniel sabotages the ad Miranda wrote, changing the phone number, so that he is the only applicant. He calls Miranda several times, disguising his voice while pretending to be various unsuitable applicants. He finally presents the perfect applicant: a 60-year-old widow from England with years of experience, giving the name “Mrs. Doubtfire” after reading the news headline “Police Doubt Fire Was Accidental”. With the cosmetics skills of his brother (Harvey Fierstein), a makeup artist, his brother’s partner, and his own acting talent, Daniel goes to the Hillard residence as Euphegenia Doubtfire. He uses his knowledge of his family’s passions, bringing up storytelling to his youngest daughter Natalie and soccer to Chris, and so is quickly offered the job. As Mrs. Doubtfire, Daniel is able to see his children every day, giving him the opportunity to be the firm father figure that he wasn’t formerly. He initially has the children doing chores and homework, but still finds time to join them in their favorite activities, including reading stories, soccer, and bike rides. The difference shows in the children, and Miranda remarks that something about Mrs. Doubtfire is very familiar.
…
In family court, Daniel acts as his own attorney and confesses his need to be with his children, but the judge, although feeling sympathy for Daniel and realizing his need to be with his children, finds Daniel’s behavior somewhat disturbing, and custody is awarded solely to Miranda, which only grieves her even more. Furthermore, Daniel’s visitation rights are further restricted, as the judge only allows him to see his children with supervision from a court liaison. Miranda and the children all miss Daniel very badly, and one day they see Aunt Euphegenia’s House, a new children’s TV show starring Daniel as Mrs. Doubtfire. This evidence leads Miranda to renegotiate the terms of custody with Daniel and establish a joint custody arrangement. Miranda will not seek a housekeeper/caretaker while she is at work in the afternoons, instead arranging for the children to spend that time with Daniel. The film concludes with Daniel picking up his kids, and Miranda smiling while watching an episode of Aunt Euphegenia’s House, featuring advice to children of divorced parents, saying that no matter what type of family living arrangement children have, love will maintain the bond.

Harry Potter is with Dursleys for the summer, learning to do more spells, and awaits an imminent visit from Uncle Vernon’s sister Marge. Harry loses his temper when Marge insults his family, and unintentionally causes her to inflate and float away. Harry flees, as he expects to be punished for performing magic outside of school. The Knight Bus appears and takes Harry to the Leaky Cauldron where Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge tells Harry he will not be expelled. Harry learns that Sirius Black, who is said to be a supporter of Lord Voldemort, has escaped from Azkaban and that Black will likely come after him.
Harry journeys to Hogwarts with his best friends Ron and Hermione. On the Hogwarts Express train, they share a compartment with the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Remus Lupin, who is sleeping when they enter the compartment. Abruptly, the train is stopped and a Dementor boards, searching for Black. Harry faints when the Dementor enters their compartment, but Lupin awakens and repels the Dementor after hearing a woman-like scream. At school, Albus Dumbledore informs the Hogwarts students that the Dementors have been set as a guard around the school grounds as a protection against Black. In addition to Lupin, Hagrid is announced as the new Care of Magical Creatures teacher. Lupin’s lessons prove enjoyable; he teaches useful spells and helps less confident students like Neville. However Hagrid’s class does not go to plan; on the first day, Draco Malfoy deliberately provokes the Hippogriff Buckbeak into attacking him. His father Lucius Malfoy successfully has Buckbeak sentenced to death.
…
Hermione reveals that she possesses a time-turner, which is how she has been taking multiple classes at once. She and Harry travel back in time three hours, watching themselves go through the night’s events. They set Buckbeak free and return to the Whomping Willow. As the Dementors are about to attack the “other” Harry and Sirius, Harry realizes that he is the person who cast the Patronus, which gives him the confidence to do so now. Harry and Hermione rescue Sirius, who escapes on Buckbeak. At the end of the year, Lupin resigns, knowing that people will not allow a werewolf to teach their children. Later, Sirius sends Harry a Firebolt, an extremely fast racing broom.

Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) is a divorced father who is unable to keep a stable job, the bulk of them being failed business ventures. He is desperate to win the support of his son Nick (Jake Cherry), whom he fears is beginning to look up to his more successful future stepfather, Don (Paul Rudd), a bond trader on Wall Street. Larry therefore applies for a job at the American Museum of Natural History, where he is assigned as a night guard.
The three elder (soon to be retired) night guards, Cecil (Dick Van Dyke), Gus (Mickey Rooney), and Reginald (Bill Cobbs), give him a quick tour, advise him to leave some of the lights on, and warn him not to let anything “in . . . or out”, which Larry meets with humorous skepticism. They also leave some odd instructions for him.
Once night comes, Larry discovers that the museum exhibits come to life. Larry barely manages to survive through the night. First, he discovers a Tyrannosaurus rex drinking from a water fountain; Larry distracts it by throwing a bone it has ripped from its own skeleton. Then, despite a narrow escape in the wildlife exhibits, Larry manages to lock up the lions. Finally, he double-checks his belt, only to discover that a capuchin monkey named Dexter has in fact stolen his keys. When Dexter destroys the old guards’ instruction manual, Larry is forced into humiliating himself.
…
The next day, Dr. McPhee fires Larry despite his effort to clean up the museum; but when the reports issued by the news media begin increasing the Museum’s popularity, he readmits Larry. Some time later, Larry appears in Nick’s classroom during Career Day. Later that night, Larry returns with Nick and all the exhibits celebrate. Cecil, Gus, and Reginald eventually become janitors at the Museum; a stereotypical punishment in comedy films for defeated antagonists (and still allows them to be around the energies of the tablet).

The extended McCallister family prepares to spend Christmas in France, gathering at Peter and Kate’s home in Chicago the night before their flight. Eight year-old Kevin, Peter and Kate’s son, finds himself the ridicule of the other children, and after getting into a fight with Buzz, his older brother, he is sent to the third floor of the house, wishing his family would disappear. When a power failure causes the McCallister’s to wake up late, they accidentally leave the sleeping Kevin behind as they hastily depart to the airport. On the trans-Atlantic flight, Kate realizes that they have left Kevin behind, and once in Paris, immediately tries to book a return trip back to Chicago. While the rest of the family is set to return two days later, on Christmas, Kate manages to fly into Dallas and then Scranton, but cannot get a flight back to Chicago. She manages to hitch a ride with Gus Polinski and his polka band who are traveling to Milwaukee.
Meanwhile Kevin, waking up to find the house empty, is elated that his wish came true and enjoys doing activities that he was normally not allowed to do. However, Kevin finds himself scared by the appearance of the police, called by his parents to check on Kevin, his next door neighbor “Old Man” Marley who was rumored to have murdered his family back in 1958, and the appearance of the “Wet Bandits”, Harry and Marv, who are raiding other houses along the block with their occupants away on holiday. On Christmas Eve, Kevin manages to overhear Harry and Marv discuss plans for targeting his house that night. After seeing Santa Claus and watching a local choir perform in hopes to have his family return, Kevin runs into Marley, and comes to realize that the man is quite friendly, and none of the rumors about him are true. Kevin finds Marley is estranged from his son, and suggests he reunite with him for Christmas. So that night, Kevin returns home to prepare a series of booby traps about the house. The bandits are initially fooled by Kevin’s illusion that the house is occupied, but realize he is home alone, and attempt to gain entry, running into the various traps. They manage to chase Kevin out of the house, who flees to the vacated, neighboring Murphy home. The Wet Bandits manage to trap Kevin but then Marley is able to subdue the two bandits, who are later arrested by the police. After thanking Marley, Kevin returns home, leaving milk and cookies out for Santa’s arrival while still wishing for his parents to return home.
Kevin wakes up the next morning to find his mother has returned after she finally arrived in Chicago. Shortly afterward, the rest of the McCallisters, having traveled directly to Chicago from Paris, arrive and the extended family celebrates Christmas together, Kevin keeping silent on his encounter with the bandits. Peter finds Harry’s missing gold tooth where he was hit with a paint can the night before, wondering what it is he found on the floor. Kevin discovers Marley took his advice and watches him and his son reunite. However, Buzz angrily shouts at him, “Kevin! What did you do to my room?!”, as his room had not yet been cleared up, so Kevin races away, and the film ends.
