Violet Sanford (Piper Perabo) leaves her hometown of South Amboy, New Jersey, her father Bill (John Goodman), and best friend Gloria (Melanie Lynskey) to pursue her dreams in nearby New York City. When leaving town to become a songwriter, she signs an autograph which is pinned on the wall of the pizza place where she worked. The wall has many other autographs signed by the rest of the employees in South Amboy that left town hoping to make it big.
Violet tries unsuccessfully, dozens of times, to get her demo tape noticed by the recording studios. With only a few dollars left in her pocket after her apartment was robbed, she goes to an all-night diner and notices some girls flaunting the hundreds of dollars in tips they earned. After inquiring, she finds out that they work at a trendy bar named Coyote Ugly. She finds her way to the bar and convinces the bar owner Lil (Maria Bello) to hire her. Lil hires her and explains she did so because Violet looks like a kindergarten teacher who the childish bar patrons will come to see. She is reluctantly nicknamed ‘Jersey’. After starting her job, she quickly discovers she must learn the ropes of singing, dancing, and performing wild acts before a rowdy crowd.
One night, she tries to get herself noticed by a music industry scout. The bartender jokingly points out Kevin O’Donnell (Adam Garcia), making her believe that he is the bar owner. When the joke is discovered, Violet feels that Kevin was making a fool out of her. This event eventually brings them closer together. Kevin tries to help her in overcoming her shyness on the stage and they finally become lovers, in spite of his attempt to hide his past and departure from Australia. She finally lands a deal with a record label after a successful performance at an open mic night at the Bowery Ballroom which was attended by all of the ‘Coyotes’ from the Coyote Ugly saloon.

The film begins with a sequence inspired by the novel’s prologue set during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, in which a single Israeli A-4 jet carrying a nuclear weapon is shot down over the Syrian desert. The bomb, over time, is consumed by the sand and disappears.
The film narrative then shifts forward 29 years and inside a secret government bunker in Mount Weather, Virginia, where President J. Robert Fowler (James Cromwell) and some of his senior national security advisors, including Central Intelligence Agency Director William Cabot (Morgan Freeman), are conducting a top-secret wargame, simulating a Russian nuclear attack against the United States.
In 2002, the bomb is found in Syria by a couple of scrap dealers and unwittingly sold to an arms dealer named Olson (Colm Feore), who in turn sells it to an Austrian neo-Nazi named Richard Dressler (Alan Bates) for 50 million dollars on the black market.
Meanwhile, the United States becomes concerned when Alexander Nemerov (Ciaran Hinds) becomes the new president of the Russian Federation. Nemerov is seen as a hard-liner with regards to his control over the Russian military. The Director of Central Intelligence seeks the opinion of young CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Ben Affleck), who has done extensive research on Nemerov’s life and career. While on a routine inspection of Russia’s nuclear weapons facilities, Cabot and Ryan are invited to the Kremlin to meet with Nemerov personally. Tension arises when Nemerov likens the United States’ involvement in Russian-Chechen affairs to “sleeping with another man’s wife”, with Russia playing the part of the betrayed and vengeful husband. Nonetheless, Nemerov appears to like Jack Ryan (Affleck) after Ryan complements Nemerov in Russian.
The final scene takes place in Washington, D.C., where Presidents Fowler and Nemerov address the Baltimore tragedy and the future of Weapons of Mass Destruction during a speech on the White House lawn. In a nearby park, Ryan and Cathy Mueller are having a picnic when they are approached by Grushkov. It is revealed that Grushkov is Spinnaker: Cabot’s covert source in Moscow. Grushkov gives Dr. Muller a “modest gift” for her engagement to Ryan. Muller and Ryan are perplexed, as they have not told anyone of their engagement. Ryan asks Grushkov how he could possibly know this secret, but he simply smiles, shrugs and walks away.

In the year 2035, robots are commonplace, doing all forms of jobs from factory work to mail delivery. On the day before the release of the new Nestor Class 5 (NS-5) Chicago Homicide Detective Del Spooner receives a call that his old friend Doctor Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell), inventor of the Three Laws of Robotics and co-founder of U.S. Robotics (USR), had been found dead. Surveillance footage initially suggest Lanning’s death is a suicide. However, Spooner, who has an intense distrust of robots, believes Lanning was murdered. With the help of Doctor Susan Calvin, he searches Lanning’s office where he finds an NS-5 and captures it after it fails to obey Doctor Calvin’s commands. During interrogation, the robot, who calls himself Sonny (Alan Tudyk), tells Spooner that he was built by Doctor Lanning himself and insists, when accused by Spooner, that he didn’t kill Lanning, visibly angered. Sonny also tells Spooner that he is capable of sleep and having dreams, but before Spooner can get any more information, USR CEO Lawrence Robertson (Bruce Greenwood) arrives with his lawyers and takes custody of Sonny.
After Spooner’s Commanding Officer John Bergin (Chi McBride) insists that the death was a suicide and that Spooner is getting nowhere in his investigation, Spooner decides to search Lanning’s home. As Spooner searches the house, a demolition robot with a command to demolish the house the next morning activates and destroys the house with Spooner inside. He manages to get out, but is unable to convince Doctor Calvin of his suspicions. On his way home, Spooner is approached by two USR trucks and attacked by the NS-5s inside, causing an accident. Spooner fends off an NS-5 with his cybernetic left arm, but when the police arrive, the NS-5 destroys itself while other robots clean up the remains of the accident. Spooner is unable to convince Bergin of the truth and is relieved of duty.
After escaping Robertson’s office with Sonny’s help, Spooner decide to use nanites designed to decommission robots to destroy VIKI. Sonny is sent to get them, since his dense alloy can withstand the force field protecting the nanites. Meanwhile, Calvin’s attempt to open the hatch to VIKI’s mainframe is thwarted by more NS-5s. When Sonny arrives, Spooner orders Sonny to give him the nanites and rescue Doctor Calvin. Spooner successfully destroys VIKI, returning the NS-5s to normal. Concluding that Doctor Lanning ordered Sonny to kill him after designing Sonny as a safeguard against the coming rebellion, Spooner dismisses the charges against Sonny under the pretense that murder can only happen between two humans.
