Carrie White (Sissy Spacek), a shy outcast, has her first period while showering after a P.E. class. She is humiliated by her classmates who tease her by chanting/screaming “plug it up!” The gym teacher, Miss Collins (Betty Buckley), breaks up the bullying. Miss Collins berates Carrie, but becomes horrified when she realizes Carrie has no concept of menstruation. At home, Carrie is harassed by her mother Margaret (Piper Laurie), a delusional religious fanatic, who tells her daughter the humiliation is a punishment from God for having her period.
The girls who teased Carrie are subjected to an athletic detention by Miss Collins, who then bans the chief instigator, Chris Hargensen (Nancy Allen), from the upcoming senior prom for her refusal to participate. Another of the instigators, Sue Snell (Amy Irving), feels guilty for her actions and asks her boyfriend Tommy Ross (William Katt) to take Carrie to the prom. Carrie initially refuses, thinking the invitation to be another trick, but Miss Collins’ comforting pep talk persuades her to agree.
When told about the prom, Carrie’s mother forbids her from going and warns her that Tommy will lead her into a life of sex. However, Carrie resists and in her anger, she displays telekinetic powers, causing her mother to believe her daughter is possessed by a demon. As Carrie firmly insists on going to the prom, her mother warns her that “They’re all gonna laugh at you!”
…
Some time afterward, Sue, the sole survivor, is seen walking up to the empty lot where Carrie’s house once stood. She sees a “For Sale” sign planted in some rocks, “CARRIE WHITE BURNS IN HELL” written across it with lipstick. As Sue gently kneels down to put flowers at the base of the sign, Carrie’s bloody hand reaches up and grabs her. Sue then wakes up screaming and shaking in the arms of her mother (Priscilla Pointer).

Prohibition in the United States has led to an organized crime wave in the 1920s and early 1930s. Various gangs bootleg vast amounts of alcohol and control their businesses with violence and extortion. The problem is most serious in Chicago, where gang leader Al Capone (Robert De Niro) has almost the whole city (even the Mayor of Chicago) under his control, and supplies poor-quality liquor at high prices. Treasury Department agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) is put in charge of leading the crusade against Capone and his empire. Ness’s initial strategy is to conduct raids using a large squad of uniformed police officers, but his first attempt fails when he breaks into a warehouse storing umbrellas. Capone’s reaction to the next day’s newspaper headlines about the botched raid implies that someone on the force tipped his men off.
Embarrassed over the fiasco and seeking ideas for a change of tactics, Ness has a chance encounter with Jimmy Malone (Sean Connery), an incorruptible Irish beat cop who understands the way Capone does business, and decides to ask for his help. Malone urges Ness to become as ruthless as the gangsters he wants to take down: “He pulls a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That’s the Chicago way, and that’s how you get Capone.” Malone confirms Ness’ suspicion that a cop informed Capone about the earlier raid and suggests that, because of this rampant corruption, Ness should recruit directly from the police academy in order to find team members who have not yet had a chance to come under Capone’s influence. Italian-American trainee George Stone, formerly Giuseppe Petri (Andy GarcÃa), is enlisted for his superior marksmanship and calm reactions under pressure. Joined by Treasury accountant Oscar Wallace (Charles Martin Smith), detailed to Chicago from Washington, Ness has built an incorruptible team, capable of combating Capone.
…
As he packs up his office, Ness contemplates the Saint Jude medallion that Malone had carried with him for many years (linked to his call box key), and which Malone had given to him before dying. Ness gives the medallion to Stone, reasoning that since Jude is the patron saint of police officers, Malone would have wanted him to have it. Out on the street, a reporter wishes to have a word from Ness, but Ness modestly downplays his role in the showdown. When the reporter mentions that Prohibition is due to be repealed and asks what Ness might do then, Ness smiles and responds, “I think I’ll have a drink,” then walks away into the busy Chicago streets.

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is an agent of an Impossible Missions Force (IMF) team, an unofficial branch of the CIA. Led by Jim Phelps (Jon Voight), the team assembles for a mission in Prague to prevent an American diplomat from selling the Non-official cover (NOC) list – a comprehensive list of all covert agents in Eastern Europe. The mission goes hopelessly wrong, resulting in the deaths of the diplomat and every team member except Hunt. Fleeing the scene, Hunt meets with Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny), the CIA-based director of the IMF, at a café. Kittridge discloses that the NOC list in Prague was a fake meant to draw out a mole who has infiltrated the IMF and made a deal to sell the list to an arms dealer known as “Max.” Suspicion now falls on Hunt, the only survivor of the botched mission, who makes a daring escape from the café and flees into the city.
Hunt returns to the IMF safe house, where he discovers that fellow agent Claire Phelps (Emmanuelle Béart), Jim Phelps’s wife, actually survived the mission. He begins correspondence with Max (Vanessa Redgrave), warning her about the fake NOC list and offering to deliver the real one in exchange for $10 million and a face-to-face meeting with the mole, nicknamed “Job.” Max agrees to the deal and gives Hunt a cash advance, which he uses to hire two blacklisted or disavowed intelligence agents: computer expert Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) and pilot Franz Krieger (Jean Reno). Hunt, Stickell, Krieger, and Claire infiltrate the heavily fortified headquarters of the CIA in Langley, Virginia, and successfully steal a copy of the full NOC list before escaping to a safe house in London. Once there, Hunt discovers that his uncle and mother have been falsely arrested for drug trafficking in an attempt by Kittridge to lure him out of hiding. This infuriates Hunt, and he contacts Kittridge, who offers to drop the false charges the moment Hunt surrenders to authorities. Hunt stays on the line long enough for Kittridge to trace him to the London area, then hangs up and finds Jim Phelps standing right next to him.
…
Claire tries to persuade Phelps not to kill Hunt, but he kills her instead, knocks Hunt down, and climbs up to the roof. Krieger has been following the train in a helicopter and is waiting to extract Phelps. Hunt recovers and follows Phelps, impeding his efforts to escape and tethering Krieger’s helicopter to the train as it heads into the Channel Tunnel. The fight continues, with the helicopter now following the train inside the tunnel. The two fight atop the wind-swept train before Phelps disconnects the helicopter from the train and attempts to escape. Hunt follows, leaping onto the helicopter’s landing skids and attaching explosive chewing gum to the windshield. The ensuing explosion kills Phelps and Krieger, with Ethan narrowly escaping. Now in possession of the NOC list and Max’s true identity, Kittridge reinstates Stickell as an IMF agent and drops his investigation against Hunt, who resigns from the IMF. As he flies home, a flight attendant approaches him and asks, through a coded phrase, if he is ready to take on a new mission.
